Boudoir Photography – Part 1 Why I Shoot Boudoir
Most of you know I specialize in Women’s Portraiture and shoot a lot of boudoir photos. For those of you who have never done a boudoir shoot, I want to share how I ended up focusing on women’s portraiture, why I offer boudoir photography and then talk about what is involved in one of my typical boudoir photo-shoots.
Let’s start with why I got into doing Women’s Portraiture and then boudoir photography. I started like many other people, shooting a little of everything and I was only shooting part time as more of a hobby. I always did portrait photography but also shot nature, landscapes, children or whatever I happened to have come up. I enjoyed nature and landscape photography as it incorporated things I liked; being outdoors and going for hikes fit right in with taking these types of photos.
I quickly discovered what was NOT my cup of tea!
I am often asked if I do weddings and will quickly say “I don’t but I know a few amazing photographers I can recommend to you!” If you are like me and would rather walk on hot coals than shoot a wedding, make sure you know a few reputable wedding photographers to recommend.
This isn’t giving business to your competitor; it’s giving great service to a potential client for a product you don’t supply.
I found that the clients I enjoyed photographing most were other women and that I felt the most connection with them during their pre-shoots, sessions and image reveals. At the pre-shoot consultation, I always ask why they want photos taken and what they plan to do with them. Is it for themselves, as a gift or is there some other reason they need photos taken. Other than professional head-shots, I found that most women who came in were doing it as a gift but also for themselves as a self-confidence boost.
I also found that what many women were looking for was boudoir photos.
Not everyone is familiar with the word boudoir, so I’m often approached and asked if I take sexy lingerie photos they can give to their someone special – husband, fiancé, boyfriend… it didn’t matter if they were in their 20’s or their 50’s; this was the go to gift for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas and even father’s day. And it’s such a personal gift it’s always loved and treasured by the lucky recipient.
I quickly discovered how much of a confidence boost these shoots are and how empowered women feel when they leave after their session. I love being part of an experience that enables women to love who they are today and become anyone they want to be tomorrow.
This excitement, empowerment and confidence boost makes this one of my favorite photo sessions. Giving my clients an experience that means so much more than just having their picture taken is beyond anything I envisioned when I started out.
